Amazon Cuts Jobs in Its Artificial General Intelligence Group After 16,000 January Layoffs

Sabyasachi Chandra

Amazon cut an undisclosed number of roles in its artificial general intelligence organisation on 22 July 2026, the unit behind its Nova foundation models.

The group has lost both of its most senior leaders since December, with Rohit Prasad and AGI Lab head David Luan both departing within months of each other.

The cuts sit alongside a forecast $200 billion in 2026 capital expenditure, indicating spending is shifting toward infrastructure and customer deployment rather than model research headcount.

Amazon has not disclosed the scale of the reduction, so whether this is a marginal trim or a strategic pullback from frontier model building cannot yet be established.
